Wednesday (6/20) ~ Standing On Your Own Two Hands

Bakasana, also known as Crow Pose, looks like a deceivingly intimidating pose, but in reality, when we let go of our fears and inhibitions of falling forward, this pose leaves us with quite a great feeling of empowerment.

In Yoga Journal's article about Bakasana, it states that:

"One reason arm balances are so challenging is they require both strength and flexibility. You may be very strong but still not be able to do arm balances if you don't have the necessary flexibility. And yet excellent flexibility is no guarantee of success if you don't have the needed upper body and torso strength."

Of course, Bakasana will be much more difficult to do without the proper preparatory poses, so during this class, much of the poses will bring attention to upper body strength and core strength. As always, the class will be in the vinyasa style with the usual warm-ups and wave sequences with minor variations that tie in with our peak pose of Bakasana. Of course, there will be a variety of modifications of Bakasana, so don't be discouraged if you feel you are not ready for it yet. And for those who feel they have mastered Bakasana, we may add an additional modification to keep those of you challenged.

If you cannot wait until tomorrow and are interested in reading up on Bakasana prior to class, you can click on the links on this post. There, you will find detailed instructions and tips on getting into Bakasana yourself. I would suggest warming up by doing several Sun Salutations before performing Bakasana on your own.

Lastly, bring your energy, let go of any fears or inhibitions, and most of all, have fun!
See you then!

Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!! You guys and gals rock! Perhaps it was the heat, or perhaps it was the challenging sequence, but it was HOT in the room. I couldn't stop the sweat from dripping profusely. I hope it wasn't too uncomfortable for some of you.

As noted in the beginning of the class, Bakasana focuses on upper body strength, abdominal lock, and flexible hips, so majority of the warm-up poses focused on those three components.

One thing I should have done was assisted those of you who were borderline taking off in Bakasana, but needed the extra assistance. Due to lack in time, I had to rush through several poses. Next time, if you need hands-on assistance to get into any pose, PLEASE don't hesitate to ask!!! I will be more than happy to help.

Also, please bear in mind that our practice is not for the faint in heart as you already know. I expect you know what your limitations are by now and accept those limitations regardless of where your neighbor is. This class is very challenging and I expect that you respect your boundaries and appreciate where you are. Don't ever, EVER get discouraged because you can't do something (yet), because with dedication and a positive attitude to your practice, I guarantee you that you will get there eventually. Please ask for and use modifications where necessary. It is better to do a perfect level 1 than a sloppy level 3, and with time, level 3 will come.

Your energy, commitment, and sense of humor to our practice week after week is truly inspiring. Please come up with suggestions. Let me know what pose in particular you would like to work on, and I will incorporate it into class. Also, I would be very interested in knowing what your thoughts are on tonight's class and how you feel the next day.

Thanks again!!! It was great seeing you all again tonight!

P.S. Cold Stone Ice Cream was delicious after that vigorous practice! :) I'd recommend it!
