Bally's Wednesday 5/14 ~ A New Look On the World Through Inversions

For this Wednesday's practice, we will be seeing the world in a whole new perspective, literally!

Throughout the class, we will prepare our minds and bodies to culminate towards sirsasana (headstand - one of my favorite poses!). For preparation, we will begin with sun salutations to warm up the body and bring up the heart rates. Since a headstand requires tremendous stability and strength from our core to remain balanced, we will then work on our core with some ab and lower back poses.

Headstands are seductive poses - physically challenging, visually dramatic, exhilirating, and empowering all at the same time. Of course, not all of us are ready for headstands (and believe me, that time will come), so there will be modifications for the headstand, and when/if you are ready, we can work towards the full headstand.

See you then!

Inversions were responded with some fear, some hesitations, and some sighs when the theme was announced. I think some people thought there was no way they could come into a headstand at the beginning of the class, but once we progressed through and built up confidence, pretty much everyone was in an inversion, if not the full the headstand! It was the most amazing sight to see everyone lined up against the wall with their legs up in the air. Too bad I didn't have my camera.

Remember, if you plan on practicing your headstand at home, make sure someone is around to supervise you, and use a wall! Be sure to press through the forearms and wrists, rather than putting too much pressure on the crown of the head. Lift the shoulders up and away from the neck... allow the eyes and face to relax.... and enjoy this new look on the world.

Let me know what you think of last night's class.
